OT OT again!! Another question!!

sorry to the thread for lurking and not contributing!
My forte' is more a stomach for risk and bet size...
and luck rather than analysis...

In any case my question is that I made a wonderful
investment in CAWS a few years ago that eventually
became worthless. I received notice of a class action
suit entitling me to rights in the "settlement fund"

I've always heard that you get basically nothing in
these suits and am wondering if it is worth my time
to dig into my old sad records and prove i owned it
during the period.

Just a quick answer would be helpful...

and oh.. on my trip thru financial disaster I came to
another fork in the road... where I chose..

%100 Q!

c

I thought everything was on topic here.

Thanks, freeus, for asking in advance. The following is not specifically directed at you, but your question brings up something that's been bothering me for quite a while here.

My opinion, and my opinion only, is that there is far, far too much political editorializing, posturing, ranting, and general bashing of personal government-related demons on these threads already. In the case of this forum, we are here to talk about Gorillas and Kings, not about each of our personal views on taxes, freedom, socialism, capitalism, communism, Catholicism, or Bhuddism. One can contort an argument to say these things are somehow relevant to our investments because they relate to the general economic system, or the governments that are inextricably a part of that system, but in that case you've opened a Pandora's box of "relevancy" that could encompass nearly anyone's opinion on anything important to them vis a vis national or global politics and economics. The same applies, perhaps even more forcefully, to SI threads devoted to specific stocks alone, such as the main Q threads.

I come to SI to listen, learn, and share information related to my investments and the companies behind them. I have my own strong political and social beliefs (some of which are likely to be shared by some of you, and some of which are clearly in violent opposition to the beliefs of others here). I do not trumpet those beliefs, or challenge others who post their own opinions on such matters, even when I find what they say wrong, distressing, or even repugnant to my own views. This is (again, in my opinion only) simply not the place to do that. At best, it would be distracting and time consuming; at worst, it would turn the thread into a mud-slinging (and ultimately unresolvable) war of polarized opinions that would drive others away.

It's natural that a community forms where people devote considerable time to sharing information and experience on a particular topic - and just as natural that those people come to see that community as an outlet for airing their deeply held convictions in other areas of life. However, I would respectfully suggest that if anyone feels the overwhelming need to post personal political rants, screeds, editorials, and tracts (and don't we all, on occasion?), it should be taken to Usenet, where there are over 20,000 discussion groups specifically designed for and devoted to these kinds of things, and where you will find a far larger audience that is specifically there to listen and vigorous debate any topic you choose to name. (Usenet newsgroups far predate the Web; www.deja.com is a good introduction if you're completely unfamiliar with them.) Another alternative is to put your writings up on your own web page, and provide us with a link if you absolutely feel there's a relevant aspect to the things mentioned there.

From a practical viewpoint, it already takes far too long for me to keep up with SI; if we all started using it as our personal editorial page on a regular basis, it would become impossible. It is my belief that we should keep Uncle Frank's finest tightly focused on the topics at hand.

I'm sorry to go on for so long, as I didn't intend to make it a rant on rants <g>. This is the last I will post on the topic.
