C, thats the value of branding and marketing. A lot of these "studies" are inconclusive at best.....and probably create opposing views amongst statisticans, Phd's and MD's.....all of which the common man (read investor and probably analyst) has no hope of comprehending.....,however the large drug firms and consumer marketers deal in "perception" which is why ultimatly the large caps make it and many small caps don't......it's not about technology......its perception.
A guy once defined marketing to me as "selling something that doesn't do anything to someone without a need and convincing him/her to borrow money to buy it (the product)".
I think probably applies to the market for stocks as well.....
We as a society deal in dreams, hopes and the like......we are well beyond the basic needs.
Best Regards,
Mad2

Have a laugh on me Merrill Lynch analyst Mark Fernandes raised his intermediate rating from an "accumulate" to a "buy" rating and placed a price target of $140 on the stock, based on a multiple of 60 times calendar 2000 sales. Portal Software ranks in the upper echelons of dominant infrastructure companies including VeriSign (VRSN: news, msgs), Real Networks (RNWK: news, msgs) and Phone.com (PHCM: news, msgs), according to Fernandes.

........Who is this outfit Merrill Lynch and how were these things valued 2years ago? Given these goofy ways of valuation and all the implied growth I like to suggest PC retailers as the investment idea of the day.......surely our society will need many maor computers than are available to support the growth behind Mr. Fernandes assumption.

How many times can a broker initiate coverage of a company?
Its seems that CSFB can do it twice! Especially since they soaked up shares of PHCM last week at $135. They have to hype this pig up everytime it starts to slide.
