which one of these free downloads would be best for a novice to play with? I'm afraid I'm not very good at advising on toys. It is quite possible that some other product would be more fun, if all one was interested in doing is fiddling around with Java. If the goal is serious development, though, then go for the top because anything else is a compromise. Forte has a number of packages available at this point, other than those on this page, to help serious developers get in to SynerJ with little up front.
