BR,

I partly agree with your posts - clearly LU and NT have the lead in optics and it remains to be seen whether or not CSCO can enter those markets successfully. History has shown that Cisco is pretty good at penetrating new markets so we'll have to wait and see what happens.

As for the industry as a whole and optics...optics - even "optical routing" (in it's broadest interpretation) is about delivering more bandwidth over a finite pipe. This is all good but the 21st century will be more about services than about bandwidth. Sure bandwidth will be an issue but what will be more important is service delivery for voice, video, and data over a common pipe, user profiling so new services can be pushed to the user, adding new content which simplifies our lives... these types of new services happen at layers above "optical routing" and if you've been paying attention traditional routing has moved up into higher layers as well. Optical routing is good - it can not - at least today - supplant the services delivered by traditional routing. Will it ever? Perhaps so but it will be after my investing lifetime is over.
