<< I don't want to juggle my portfolio around because I'm focusing on long-term gains and just expect to ignore whatever volatility (however tempting ;)) may occur in the coming weeks.>>

Hi, Greg. Today's 11/24. There will be almost certainly be significant volatility in the market between now and the end of the year. Some might interpret it as Y2K related. Most will recognize that it's tax planning transactions; same as happened in 1998, 1997, 1996, 1995, ... .

I enjoyed your post; good big-picture perspective.

RE : >>stocking up on some canned and frozen food as well as batteries, flashlights, candles, etc. Any other recommendations? I think it's worth shelling out 50 bucks or so to feel and be more secure.<<
Also consider...
Some bottled water and a water filter
Some way to heat your food -- maybe extra tank or 2 for gas grill ? or Coleman stove- pref. dual fuel model
Don't laugh but I recommend if nothing else in the "survival" type area - you get a supply of toilet paper, and cigarettes so you will have 2 of the most highly sought barter items if things do get bad-- because quite simply no matter how hard you try you will overlook something.
You may consider going to a dollar store and getting a cart or 2 of odds and end misc. things that you will use eventually - just in case supply lines become a problem for a while in early spring.
Unless terrorists strike or things get way out of hand having basic preparations will make things easier or at least help you be one of the last ones needing to go to the nearest FEMA shelter with thousands of neighbors you don't care to meet up close.
If things somehow are beyond help of basic preparations then nothing is enough anyhow.

Jeff

You can't be serious? Are you? <gg>

Spending 50 bucks on Y-2k preparations? What do you spend on car, health, or life insurance?

Certainley your family and your life is worth more than 50 bucks!

Get with it.
