SK Telecom selects partners for IMT-2000 development
SK Telecom is to develop a wide-band code division multiple access (W-CDMA) system in partnership with LG Information and Communication (LGIC), Hyundai Electronics Industries (HEI) and Daewoo Telecom.

The country's largest wireless operator has also selected 49 small and medium-sized venture firms with which it will develop core technology, SK Telecom announced yesterday.

The wireless operator has set December 2000 as the trial system deadline for its IMT-2000 service. It will also develop roaming technology that can be used with W-CDMA protocol systems developed by NTT DoCoMo and Nokia, the company said.

SK Telecom is also planning to select partners for the development of CDMA 2000 system from among five companies, including Samsung Electronics and LGIC, according to the company.

In early October, SK Telecom announced it would invest 123.3 billion won in the development of IMT-2000 systems in conjunction with equipment manufacturers and small and medium-sized venture companies.

"We are pursuing both CDMA 2000 and W-CDMA systems. However, we are now paying more attention to the development of W-CDMA standard because we need to bolster our position in that field," said an IMT-2000 Business Division official. The wireless operator, which pioneered the CDMA operation in the country, is confident about its competitiveness in the CDMA 2000 field, he explained.

The government will announce a national standard for IMT-2000 service next year and CDMA 2000 and W-CDMA are the two competing standards.
