re: when a network upgrade goes awry subtitle: where's the self healing? The release below didn't go into it, but this digital cross connect system (DCS, aka DACS) failure also adversely affected a number of ISPs, who slowly watched the POTS services around them return to 'normal' while many of their upstream and peering links remained down. This, according to some operators on the North American Network Operators Group [NANOG] list, which I have not taken the time to confirm. But the folks who post on NANOG are usually right on. And if one happnes to be off the mark, they get flamed into oblivion. I've been tracking this story off and on since yesterday morning.biz.yahoo.com Bell Atlantic Begins To Restore Full Phone Service To 3 Northern New Jersey Counties NEWARK, N.J., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Bell Atlantic (NYSE: BEL - news) has begun to restore full phone service to customers in three northern New Jersey counties. A computer software glitch early this morning disrupted some service for call-switching offices in Bergen, Essex, and Passaic counties. The equipment manufacturer, Alcatel, is working with Bell Atlantic at the company's Newark network hub to correct the software problem that caused the disruption. Round-the-clock restoration efforts could continue into tomorrow morning. The disruption occurred at about 12:30 a.m. during a planned upgrade of software in a call processor. Calls to 911 were re-routed automatically to local police and fire departments. Bell Atlantic also began rerouting other calls to ease network congestion. Callers attempting to place voice or data calls into or out of the affected service area have been encountering intermittent delays. Most affected by the network congestion are customers in Millburn, Montclair and Westfield and the Weequahic section of Newark served by the company's Waverly switching office. SOURCE: Bell Atlantic
