"You can bet your boots that every tech company in the world that could compete with them is looking at their sales and markup and ramping up competitive products to them."

If you haven't done so already, you should listen to and view the Merrill conference call. A company can't just "ramp up competitive products." You are overlooking the "huge barrier to entry" that JDSU enjoys. For instance, because of the conditions in which many of their products are used (e.g. submarine), the products have to go through MANY YEARS of testing in order to be certified. Also, JDSU employs 700 PhDs in the optical field. Very few, if any (certainly not one outside the optical field as you suggest) can match that kind of expertise. Someone on the JDSU thread commented that the top school, Stanford, turns out only a couple of PhD candidates every year. The point is that a company can't just go out and hire 700 qualified scientists in order to compete with JDSU. JDSU may not be a gorilla in your view, but it is no DELL either. I could assemble a computer in my garage, but I certainly couldn't design and manufacture fiber optics components.

Lindy,

<< We all have this desire to make our favorite stock a Gorilla. Just pride, I guess. But there is nothing wrong with being a King. I have made a lot of money with Kings and Princes >>

Well phrased. I do however think that evaluating JDSU's gorilla potential has merit (if only for the mental exercise <g>)

<< I think that, by our extremely high return standards. JDSU has several years to go before they get pricing pressure that will affect the stock price >>

That is the conclusion I have drawn to date.

Speaking of Kings (or in this case a Prince) the first post (or posts) of yours that I recall seeing were early in the evolution of this thread. They were admonitions on DELL. You were very prophetic. I still hold some (although I cut back considerably early on) and it is the worst performer in my portfolio YTD. Still plan to hold, but real lightly.
