Carolyn,
Yes, there are cable services that will provide internet services today. I believe that ATHM is one example and TWX through Roadrunner also has it (OG correct me if I am wrong). Once you have the data connection through the cable, you can do all the things that have been discussed. This is a deployment issue with your cable provider, not a technology issue. Wait until they give you a couple of telephone ports on your cable box so that you get ultra-cheap long distance rates.....this is right around the corner.
