Re: The Beat

JW:

I give up: what on Earth are they talking about?

Surely, they know what the allocations are?

Help me on this.

Oh, yeah: Happy Thanksgiving! (You, too, Walt, Pat, etc, etc)

Jim, thanks for the update! Its been a long time since Ive given this much thought & we both know you're stance on the issue but lets keep in mind the reason for the cap following. Qam ain't a bad thing not that it matters now & I for one know these things take time but the process of all this is a technical matter? I do still agree though that deployment over debate might have been a better solution & Im seeing the same mistakes in the November's issue?

"Cable Modem Certification"

This months

"The Dsl Solution"

looks like a good read even though I haven't yet.

My best regards,

Dug

P.S.

Im not @ all impressed w/ the T1 always on connection I get but it does work for my users in that it makes the network complete. Ive read a few folks on SI that think their Adsl connection is just the berries but after some use/time it slows. 8 meg would still be my preference!

[A different drummer?] DSL Innovator John Cioffi Joins ITeX Board of Directors
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Integrated Telecom Express (''ITeX(TM)'') a total Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (''ADSL'') solution provider, today announced the appointment of DSL innovator John M. Cioffi, Ph.D., to the Company's Board of Directors.

Known in the industry as the godfather of DSL, John Cioffi founded Amati Communications Corp. in 1991, and served as the Chief Technology Officer until Texas Instruments purchased Amati in 1998. Through Mr. Cioffi's leadership, Discrete Multi-Tone (''DMT'') technology is now the foundation of DSL products. Amati delivered the first DMT technology into the market in 1993, and licensed the technology to all of the major DSL vendors in the market including Alcatel, Motorola, TI, ADI, PairGain, NEC, 3Com, Nortel, and ECI. Mr. Cioffi worked as a modem designer at Bell Laboratories from 1978-1984, and as a disk read-channel researcher at IBM from 1984-1986. He has been on the faculty of Stanford since 1986, where he is a professor. Mr. Cioffi's particular expertise lies in the area of high-performance digital transmission and storage systems where he has over 100 publications, and 30 patents. Mr. Cioffi is also a board member of Coppercom and Marvell, and serves as a technical advisor on the boards of Charter Venture Capital, Gigabit Wireless, Kestrel, the US National Research Council Computer Science and Telecommunications Board and Broadband Last Mile Technologies Group.

ITeX will tap into John Cioffi's technical expertise as the Company pursues advanced DSL architectures and products to meet growing ADSL market demand. In addition, Mr. Cioffi's extensive industry and academic contacts will benefit ITeX as the company continues its outreach program to potential associates and partners, and looks for new talent to grow the Company.

''We are honored to have such a distinguished member of the ADSL community serve on the ITeX Board of Directors,'' said Rich Forte, President and CEO of ITeX. Forte continued, ''John's knowledge of DSL will be of tremendous value to the Company as we expand our product lines to satisfy the ever growing need for high-speed Internet access and other applications requiring broadband, such as video-on demand and video conferencing.''

John Cioffi said, ''ITeX is in a unique position with its soft-DSL modem technology that promises to help accelerate wide spread adoption of ADSL service. I am very happy to be associated with a technology leader, which has worked so hard to enable the ADSL mass market, and enhance the benefits of ADSL.''

About ITeX:

ITeX, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, designs, develops and manufactures ADSL Customer Premises Equipment (''CPE'') and Central Office (''CO'') solutions. ITeX's intellectual property, engineering expertise and strategic partnerships with key companies around the globe have been carefully built up since the company was founded to accelerate the deployment and adoption of ADSL to the mass market.

United Microelectronics Corporation (''UMC''), a world leading full-service foundry, serves as ITeX's principal investor and foundry source. So, as the demand for ADSL accelerates, ITeX's partnership with UMC guarantees semiconductor manufacturing capacity to meet its customer's requirements. Intel Corporation, which made an equity investment in 1998, is an ITeX partner. Alcatel and ITeX also have worked closely to deliver standards-based interoperable products to the market.

ITeX is a key contributing member of the standards bodies driving the future of ADSL, such as ITU and T1E1. In addition, ITeX holds memberships in the University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Laboratory (''UNH-IOL''). Through its relationship with UNH-IOL, ITeX has demonstrated interoperability with all the major Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (''DSLAM'') vendors.
