The December edition of Red Herring has a big section on digital media. Included is an interesting article on TV E-commerce in which EPGs are featured prominently. GMST is only mentioned by name once, but members of their value chain (cable providers, TV manufactures,..) are reference throughout the article. A couple of highlights:

-- One IT consulting firm (Forrester Research) has predicted that by 2004 interactive TV (which includes EPGs, enhanced broadcasts, and TV-based browsing) will be generating $11 billion in advertising and $7 billion in commercial transactions annually in the US.

-- An industry standard for the merging of e-commerce and TV has been developed by the Advanced Television Enhancement Forum (ATVEF). Some of the contributors in creating this standard include: NBC, Disney, PBS, Warner Bros., TCI, DirecTV, Liberate, Sony, Microsoft, and Intel.

Also included in this issue is an article on digital cinema, which describes the technology (pioneered by QCOM) used for the distribution of The Phantom Menace. Again, there is no reference to QCOM by name, but the users of this technology in its trial run (Hughes-JV and TI) are mentioned throughout. It sounds like this idea is a few years away from catching on big-time, but it's an interesting read nonetheless.

PRGN, which I mentioned on this thread about 10 days ago, is up nearly 50 % since then, so I'm taking my profit.
