Let these 1000 internet startups go out and plow the ground ... testing and inventing ... then the shakeout masters can come along and auction off the winners amongst them.

It's a rare internet startup that actually finds a autonomous or even defensible niche.

Remember how Microsoft struggled for recognition early on? How, in the early 80's, few people understood what they represented?

See any similarities between Microsoft's wait-and-steal (versus lead-the-pack) strategy? Microsoft was built on incorporating other people's innovation. I see AT&T using the same strategy as the wired internet moves toward the wireless-enhanced ubernet. Microsoft owned the desktop and leveraged that into dominion over the software world. AT&T has the cables and the towers ... how they leverage that remains to be seen. Will AT&T become the Microsoft of the ubernet?
