RE <<Well, the Russians invented the airplane, the telephone and the light bulb, so this is certainly believable.>>>

I am not sure if that is true...its the first I have heard that those inventions were theirs. Whether its true or not, they have pulled off some incredible feats. For me it was funny to hear that developing a new cpu would be a new goal just one more chip to add to the current pile, and when there are so many more immediate issues that need attention in Russia.

But who knows, it could be their scientific prowess that keeps them from economic oblivion.

As far as I understand, you are tying to be sarcastic,
right? However it is certainly hard to deny that
the chopper was invented by Russian-by-origin.
What if I tell you that former Russians also
turned Pentium into Coppermine, wrote critical
parts of Intel's prefetching "SPEC compiler",
and fixed the instability problem in AMD Athlon
boards, would you believe me?
