Peter, it is important to note that effective short interest is much smaller than it appears on these charts. this is due to the fact that the rise in short interest is much smaller than the rise in new stocks outstanding due to splits, new issues, etc.

looking at short interest per se, it seems to be at new record highs, but relative to the number of stocks floated it has actually decreased substantially over recent years.
