Sorry, but this article contradicts itself, and Erik Schatzker, the author should more closely review what he writes.

First he writes "Sprint Cancels Plan to Buy Cisco, Tellabs Equipment"

Then later he writes "Nortel and Cisco remain the main equipment suppliers for ION" (unrelated to the first comment, but could be easily confused)

Then further he writes and quotes Srints Robinson, "Sprint may consider using another product from Cisco, Robinson said."

And finally "By getting the equipment and services from a single company,Sprint expects to slightly reduce the cost of building the network, Robinson said. He said it's too early to know which supplier the company will choose."

This article is about as credible as a $3 bill, and given Cisco is the supplier for the ION network, and the final statement in bold above doesn't sound like a company with rushed plans - at least before Jan 1, 2000....draw your own conclusions.

MD

Hello All, the region near Ottawa is home to JDS, NN, Corel and many other big high tech names. Nortel based in my home town of Brampton, Ontario has made substantial investments in the Ottawa region for R&D & as the previous poster said is quickly becoming a Fiber hotspot. The following post is from the Wi-LAN thread and I thought would be of interest. WIN:TSE was up 32% today on this news. I hold both WIN & CSCO. Cheers!!!

Sprint Cancels Plan to Buy Cisco, Tellabs Equipment (Correct)
<snip> Lucent, Nortel

Sprint, which agreed to be acquired by rival MCI WorldCom Inc. for $129 billion last month, is evaluating new switches like Lucent's 7R/E and Nortel's Succession, Robinson said. They offer in a single box what Sprint hoped to get with the equipment from Cisco and Tellabs and software from Telcordia Technologies Inc.

Nortel and Cisco remain the main equipment suppliers for the ION data network, Robinson said.

The decision to cancel the plan wasn't due to problems with any of the products that Sprint planned to buy, Robinson said. Lisle, Illinois-based Tellabs delivered its product, the AN2100 switch, to Sprint on time and proved that it works, he said. Tellabs yesterday said it plans to continue making the AN2100 and sell it to other customers.

Robinson said ``a small part' of the $500 million set aside for ION was earmarked for the voice update. He didn't know how much Cisco, Tellabs and Morristown, New Jersey-based Telcordia stood to get in revenue. ``From a revenue standpoint, this was less than $25 million,' Cisco spokesman Doug Wills said.

By getting the equipment and services from a single company, Sprint expects to slightly reduce the cost of rebuilding the voice network, Robinson said. He said it's too early to know which supplier the company will choose.

Sounds like the SMOKE and MIRRORS of the short rumors that inundated the market about csco not going to meet earnings before the last report...that took the stock way down and fortunately allowed me to make a great deal of money on options when it went into the 60's and 70's...
article is two faced for sure.
