NEW INDIAN AMBASSADOR TO U.S. NOMINATED

Hong Kong, November 24, 1999--India has selected Brajesh Mishra, Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's national security adviser, as the country's next ambassador to Washington, the Far Eastern Economic Review reports in its December 2 issue, released tomorrow.

The retired diplomat, who has served in China, is one of the principal architects of the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party's diplomatic initiative in the wake of India's 1998 nuclear test. He was responsible for drafting a letter sent by Vajpayee to U.S. President Bill Clinton explaining the test as a response to the Chinese threat.

Mishra will coordinate Clinton's forthcoming trip to India in the spring of 2000.
