Actually, it can almost be considered an epic of an epoch, considering its date of vintage.

Ah ... I see. The cable itself is powered. Wow. This must be a pretty good trick on a very long cable. Just goes to show how feeble is my grasp on basic electronics. I was trying to envision batteries at the bottom of the sea faultlessly powering lasers for 30 years ... and not really succeeding.
