The days of free fast surfing will soon be replaced by willful free slow surfing forcing the Customer to pay for QoS if he needs speed.

It is not a matter of forcing - the customer now does not have the choice - they get crappy unstable (IP) service without the ability to choose. As ZO pointed out, internet access [and transport] has sunk to a commodity level.

The next level (no pun..) will be choice down to the customer application level. ATM is the only protocol that currently offers a standard-stable and predictable QoS.

The newer protocols based on IP which offer some sort of QoS are just wishful thinking.
