ATM has an advantage because it has a short fixed cell size. These short cells will appear in all-silicon or all-optical switches before IP, just because of the huge variable packet sizes in IP.

fumble, this is quickly changing (has already changed?). All of todays terabit routers are mostly silicon-based vs. yesterday's gigabit routers which were mostly sw based.

Also, ipv6 primary mission in life is to add known ip header info/fields that makes support of silicon-based switching system much more feasible. It still needs to be field proven, but this is where most of the VC money is going in the switching area. Don't ignore IP. NN isn't.
