I wrote to one of the guys there and here is his response:

Brian,

Investors are looking for value plays in optics right now, and Ortel is valued well below JDSU, ETEK and SDLI so getting some attention. Ortel has not competed effectively against these companies in the past however, and I haven't followed it closely enough to have an opinion on it from an investor's perspective. JDSU, SDLI and ETEK are all growing their optics business at 100% annually (in unit shipments). How about Ortel? If not, why not? One thing to look at: where are its margins (gross and operating)? If they are below industry average because of past mismanagement, improvements
here could provide substantial leverage to earnings growth (assuming they correct the mismanagement problems). SDLI used a turn-around in gross margins (through better product yields) to great affect in late 1998 and 1999. It's rapid earnings growth above revenue ramp was a major reason for investor interest in this stock. Good luck.
