Hewlett-Packard says Asian sales at pre-crisis levels
BLOOMBERG in Singapore

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hewlett-Packard, the world's No 2 computer-maker, has announced its Asian sales for the year to October 31 will cross the US$7 billion level they were at just before the region's financial turmoil in 1997.
Aided by economic recoveries in South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and elsewhere, the company's revenue growth in Asia outpaced gains in many other regions in the fourth quarter, Hewlett-Packard said.

Asian sales for the three months to October 31 surged 41 per cent to $1.4 billion, making up an eighth of the total sales of $11.4 billion.

"For Asia-Pacific, we're at pre-crisis levels and for Singapore and Southeast Asia, we're close to those levels," said Cecilia Pang, a company spokesman in Singapore.

"We're optimistic next year's sales will continue with the growth momentum."

The rebound in Hewlett-Packard's sales underscores the region's economic recovery from its worst recession in decades, with households and companies speeding up spending on computers, printers and other information technology products.

Asia's revenue growth helped Hewlett-Packard top some analysts' forecasts, boosting its shares by 22 per cent last Thursday after the earnings were released.

In the United States, Hewlett-Packard's fourth-quarter sales rose 9 per cent to $5.3 billion, while European revenue gained 5 per cent to $3.9 billion and Latin American sales increased 18 per cent to $600 million.

In the year to October 31, Hewlett-Packard's Asia sales rose 25 per cent to $5.6 billion.

Including sales of Agilent Technologies, the medical equipment and measurement devices unit in which it sold shares earlier this month, sales would be about $7 billion, which would match those in 1997.

In Singapore, a key manufacturing centre, Hewlett-Packard's shipments rose 19 per cent to $5.9 billion, or about 8 per cent of the island state's gross domestic product.

"On the manufacturing side for Singapore, even in the crisis, we haven't done badly," Ms Pang said.

"We're picking up the growth momentum now."
