Key Elements for Portable Player
More and more firms are using general-purpose chips for audio processing in portable players that use flash EEPROM. The new players feature three key product characteristics: support for multiple encoding schemes and copyright protection technologies, multi function performance, and enhanced portability.

Embedding Format Information in Audio Files
To allow portable players to support multiple encoding schemes, a standard is being considered that will embed information on the specific encoding and copyright protection methods used for each audio file. SDMI appears to be working toward defining the format for this information, as well as on data transfer standards between the player and a PC. A portable player would read this data and call on the appropriate software. For example, information specifying the data format could be embedded in the audio file header, possibly along with digital watermarking and similar information. The record companies are expected to launch a project to embed digital watermarking in audio CD content, for copyright protection purposes, in 1999.
