Is Red Velvet cake a Devil's Food Cake? We had that all the time too! Well, I mean special times. It was round with a hole in the middle, and very dark red. I'm pretty sure round with a hole in it has a special name, but I forget what it is.

I forgot about that!

Yes, I ate a LOT of that jello salad.

This isn't meant as a comment on your heritage, but this reminds me of a cookbook I DIDN'T buy, but have secretly admired for a long time ~ White Trash Cooking. I also didn't buy, but have admired, a cookbook with Elvis' favorite recipes. But I DID buy, although have never used, Cooking for Your Evil Twin.

Red Velevet Cake--- a big favorite in Virginia. With a cream cheese frosting.
One summer I was living in an apartment with some college friends and for some reason that completely escapes me now, half of the football team was there. And I was waxing on about red velvet cake and decided to make one for them. But the store I ran to only had green food coloring. So I made green velvet cake. The next day several of the guys called me to say that something very strange had happened to their bowels in the digestion of this green confection. And that it was very scary.

We were out yesterday to a friend's house for the bird and family thing. We were the non-family family ... quite cool really. After the ritual act of gluttony we were kicking back in the living room, and there I discovered a book called The Lutheran Church Basement Women Cookbook. It was full of bizarre Nordic trivia and an amazing number of recipes for Jell-O.
(They hail from Michigan's upper peninsula, ya.)
There was one (called Salad Excellent, I think) that used two packs of green jell-o with - Get This - shredded cabbage, cucumber, carrot and pineapple folded in. Oh, and cream cheese. It was recommended for festive occasions like funeral banquets.
