Do you mean the copy protection system or the regional coding system?

My guess is it won't let you copy pre-recorded commercial DVDs. I'll bet they release it really as a VCR replacement with the additional features the article mentioned. You'll be able to record digital TV broadcasts (unless they're encrypted?) and your own movies.

On the other hand, I just read that some guys in one of the Scandinavian countries broke the DVD copy-protection scheme (called CSS). Supposedly they wrote a program called DeCSS that removes it and then you can copy it on your PC. I did a search on the web and couldn't find any quick references to DeCSS (there were a lot that had nothing to do with DVD copy protection).
