Thus, instead of diving head-first into e-tail stocks, it makes far more sense to take a look at some of the behind-the-scene players providing tools that should be found in every e-tailer's toolbox this holiday season. After all, attracting new customers, developing excellent fulfillment capabilities, and designing a user-friendly site is only half the battle. Building long-term customer relationships and cross-selling existing customers is what will really separate the e-commerce men from the boys. For example, real-time personalization and one-to-one marketing firms like Broadvision (BVSN) and Net Perceptions (NETP) will increasingly become a crucial component of every e-tailer's arsenal. Direct e-marketing firms like Message Media (MESG) and Exactis.com (XACT) will also be valuable customer relationship components. However, most important to this mix will be service firms.

With reference to Singer's comments; he referred several times to the example of a company "over in Europe" which reported 50% higher sales after installing NETP. I assume he was referring to GUS (Great Universal Stores) in the UK. I felt uneasy when I heard that because although the GUS figures were impressive I did not remember them as being 50%. Later when asked two or three times by the interviewer Singer qualified what he said by saying he did not remember exactly but the increase was in high double figures. Since he made the 50% a prominent feature in his analysis I think he ought to have known.

I have tried to find that study on the NETP company site and here but have not found it - I think it was about 4-6 weeks ago. Does anyone know the figure?

I thought Singer was quite definite about raising the target price. He said that the introduction of the knowledge management software was a significant new revenue stream which he had not incorporated in his original target.
I did not hear him say he would delay the new price target awaiting a potential shake out - he said he would change it soon.
