The double-lumen catheter provides physicians, OB nurses and midwives the ability to obtain quick and reliable readings of uterine activity during labor. IUP catheters are used in approximately 20 percent of all births in the U.S. IUP catheter measurements are conducted to gather information on the intensity and duration of labor contractions, including both the uterine resting tonus and the uterine contraction pressure. This information is set in relation to the condition of the fetus. Monitoring of the intrauterine pressure is especially useful on patients who have undergone prior cesarean sections to manage the intensity of pressure and to help prevent any harm to the pre-stressed uterus. Like its predecessor, the Koala C, the Koala M1333E is equipped with a transparent tube to give positioning feedback of the catheter tip location. This helps to prevent extraovular (outside the membranes) placement. An amniotic fluid port enables amniotic fluid communication. (A recent study presented at the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists indicated that catheters are frequently misplaced outside the amniotic membrane.) The Koala M1333E catheter incorporates an advanced technology called atmospheric isolating monitoring, which relays intrauterine pressure from the catheter-sensor tip to an external, reusable transducer cable. The technology also gives clinicians the ability to zero the monitor before the cable connects to the catheter. This feature enhances the accuracy of monitor readings, while eliminating costly re-insertions of new sterile catheters into the uterus due to a need of re-zeroing. Fewer insertions into the uterus reduce the risk of infections. The sterile, latex free and disposable catheter is safe for both the mother and child. It does not contain any electronic components, and its sealed tip prevents plugs, providing continuous readings. A small, flexible-tip design helps facilitate insertion of the catheter. The Koala M1333E, currently for sale in the U.S., is manufactured by Clinical Innovations, known for its expertise in intrauterine pressure measurements.
