Last night PBS had a very nice special on Van Gogh, and I thought of you:

The trip to California (my first) was really wonderful, though not nearly long enough. Thanks to X and Michael M for their suggestions.

We landed in San Diego, rented a convertible, then drove up the coast to Laguna Beach. My my my, what a beautiful place . . . laid back people, beautiful beaches, ohhh the flora: ficus, succulents, palms, blooming azaelas, tons of art galleries (more per capita than anywhere I've been before) great food (Italian joints on every corner)
I'd love to live there. Mighty fine.

Next morning we drove up to Santa Monica. Okay, people get to live in places like this? GMAFB! Excellent lunch at Shutter's-- a DeLux joint on the beach that proved, in the hands of the right cook, even a burger (on a yummy pretzel bun) can take one to gastronomical nirvana.

Then we drove up to LA, and proceeded to shatter every misconception I'd held about the city. Nicey nice nice. We stayed at the Mondrian, and let me tell ya, it was easily the most sumptuous, elegant, aesthetically intoxicating hotel I've ever visited. It's an Ian Schraeger Hotel; designed by Phillip Starck. The moment we walked through the doors, we were trasported to another reality, and the rooms were the stuff of dreams: floor to ceiling windows with lovely views, comfy beds with exquisite broadcloth cotton linens, a blooming white orchid, a decor that was a study in light greys and whites; pistachio colored, marble topped, furniture pieces as colorful accents . . . my breath is rarely taken away. Here it was. EVERY detail was artfully considered, and made the price of admission worth every penny. Wow.

We'd hoped to visit the Getty Museum, but alas it was closed on Monday so we spent a couple of hours driving through Bel Air, contributing to the California breeze with our constant oohing and ahhing. Too bad all those people aren't as happy as they are rich (that's my jealous consolation, and I'm sticking to it.)

We had an early flight departing from San Diego the next morning, so we headed back dwon the PCH, and arrived in SD just in time to catch a romantic sunset. Had a memorable dinner that night at Ristorante Mama Ana's in the Gaslight District:salad with bibb lettuce, pear slices, walnuts, shaved parmesan reggiano, topped with a raspberry vinagarette; sirloin carpaccio as a second course, then a thinly (divinely) crusted pizza topped with artichoke, mushrooms, and prosciutto, accompanied by a couple of glasses of reserve chianti. Tiramisu as dessert. We had some great meals during the trip--this one was the best.

Caught a plane back to ATL the next morning at 7:20, landed at 3:00, then found myself in a voice-over session at 4:00, and straining to meet two deadlines for the next morning. Welcome back to reality.

Picked up my mom the next day, drove her up to Atlanta (4 hrs roundtrip) smoked a turkey and proceeded to have a fine Thanksgiving. Hope all of you enjoyed yours.

It's good to be alive.
