MTV India holds 'World's Longest Party'

November 27, 1999, 18:15 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: This is one weekend bash that promises 50 hours of non-stop fun and excitement. And a Guinness record for the world's longest party.

Music channel MTV India's "World's Longest Party" kicked off to an exuberant start at the fireball discotheque in suburban Delhi last night, with film star Anil Kapoor opening the event and pop singer Remo setting the pace for the dancers with his melodious songs. The party, which began at 10 p.m. on Friday, will carry on through Saturday before winding up at midnight Sunday.

It will see 30 live performances from some of the best acts in the Indian music industry like pop singers Harbhajan Mann, Remo, Shaimak Davar, Kamal Khan, Mehnaz, Raageshwari, Suneeta Rao and Anamika. The music will be a mix of live and recorded songs including pop, Punjabi bhangra, reggae, blues, just about everything that will ensure that the tempo remains at a high throughout the day and night.

Helping keep the mood upbeat will be MTV VJs Cyrus Sahukar, Amrita Arora, Asif Sen, Nikhil Chinappa and a host of DJs.

"There's going to be no slowing down, no stopping us," MTV managing director Alex Kuruvilla told the Times of India. Chinappa observed, "It's going to be the longest Saturday night anyone's seen. I promise it'll be wild."

Leading percussionist Sivamani said, "I love playing for Delhiites, this event has all the energy to get the audience tapping and dancing."

Representatives of the Guinness Book of World Records and India's Limca Book of Records are present at Fireball to supervise the first-of-its-kind dance party in India as well as the world.

"MTV India is attempting to set this record and Delhi was the chosen venue because it was logistically possible in the city with Fireball selected as a cool place to have it," MTV associate director communications, Rupali Wadhi, told India Abroad News Service. She said "MTV believes in doing one big event in Delhi every year to keep in touch with its audience."

But Guinness has laid down certain guidelines that MTV India has to follow to ensure the success of the record-making event. Like a minimum of 10 dancers have to be on the dance floor at any given time, the same group of dancers have to be present from start to finish on a rotational basis.

The dancers, all above the age of 18, had to go through a medical examination to ensure they were physically fit before they could register for the event. Despite this, a nurse and ambulance will be on standby throughout the 50-hour-long bash.
