JDN,

I don't really mean to be picky, but when you assemble a post and use the word "lozengers", doesn't your spell checker issue a signal?

The word is lozenges.

Have fun,
Phil

Can Zinc Zap a Cold?

Zinc is a trace element that plays a role in biological systems. It has been shown to disrupt the replication of some cold-causing viruses.
Zinc has a beneficial effect on our immune system (the immune system fights infection). In well-designed clinical studies, zinc gluconate in lozenge form reduces the severity and duration of cold symptoms. If zinc is taken in tablet form, it does not yield the results obtained with lozenges.
Side effects of zinc tend to be minor but include objectionable taste and mouth irritation. Some zinc lozenges contain a flavoring to make them more palatable. However, some additives intended to mask the taste of the zinc gluconate may inactivate its beneficial effects. So avoid zinc lozenges that contain citrate, tartrate, sorbitol, or mannitol.

For best results, zinc lozenges, a nonprescription medication found in most pharmacies and health-food stores, should be taken as soon as
possible at the onset of a cold. The dosage is two lozenges to start, followed by one every two to three hours while awake. Remember to
dissolve the lozenge in the back of your throat, and don't chew or swallow it.
