To the Lurkers.........

The G & K Thread Portfolio Survey flushed out quite a number of lurkers. We were glad to hear from you and appreciate your submissions. Uncle FranQ and I estimate something like a 50:1 ratio of lurkers to thread regulars. You represent a tremendous reserve of brains, energy, experience, and perspective from which we would likely benefit. I"d like to encourage you to RTFM, and join the discussion. Your learning curve will accelerate when you find yourself part of the discussion.

We really would benefit if each person would take up just one of the interesting internet/telecommunications stocks that were listed just 1-3 times in the survey, and present it to the thread as a gorilla or royalty candidate. If we pool our talents, we can widen the net in searching for gorilla candidates, and do it faster. You could teach me a lot; I've no idea nor do I have the time to look up BVSN, COVD, or MRVC, etc.

Thanx again, Apollo

Sir Apollo

Great Job!!

i to am surprised at the high place finish of gemstar considering it is not discussed nearly as much as lower placed finishers.
the 5th place finish of cash in the 15 most widely held catogory was also surprising. one would think with all the gorillas and kings on the list that cash would hold a much lowlier position.
is it not true that one should never try to time a gorilla.
i know personally that waiting on J as in Jaugernaut DSU
i have left mucho denro on the table. one should probably not try to time a king soon to be a gorilla either.
i would like to see more discussion as to jdsu being crowned a gorilla. that would porbably get more cash into the hunt.

one could take the top ten holdings(less the cash) and make that a G&K index, track it for the next yr and then do another survey this time next yr. it would be very interesting to see the changes.

Stan

Fantastic job in accumulating and presenting the data. I found it interesting that as a group we are more interested in finding gorillas than investing in them with only half in CSCO and less than a quarter in MSFT and INTC, in spite of the historical data of these stocks over the years.

I would think that the heavy rating of Q has to deal a lot with the fact it has become such a larger winner and therefore predominate in our portfolios. Perhaps the experience of finding this stock in a tornado has made us more daring to look for the next big one. In that vein, look how RMBS was only in three portfolios; if we had taken your poll in September I would imagine in would be one of the top ten holdings (for sure they are missing you, me and unclewest and downsouth).

Also noted, besides GMST showing, is little CREE with a higher participation than LU and SUNW and telecom semi plays like BRCM, RFMD and PMCS, all of which have had 100x the publicity yet apparently have not endeared themselves to the same extent. Than again, the five I mentioned may have a lot press releases but are not often discussed on this thread, perhaps because they are not seen in a simian light. Others might disagree.

Lastly, interesting disparity in Gilder stocks with mutual love of Q and JDSU; other than than that some representation of BRCM and SUNW and a few in the others column. Apparently no group think in that regard.

Once again, many kudos for your time, energy, and effort.

Voop

Although it was obvious to see as the portfolios came rolling in that the morale of this thread lives and dies by the movement of Qualcomm, I was happy to see such a handsome looking top "15" heavily weighted holdings list. Considering the YTD returns of the top three - Qualcomm, JDS Uniphase and Cisco - we all had plenty to give thanks for on Thursday. I'm not sure the Pilgrims and the Indians had that in mind all those years ago, but none of us should be complaining.

It might be interesting for a similar study to take place over on the other thread - Gorilla Game Investing in the eWorld as I see quite a few stocks that qualify for that category.

Nice work, Apollo. I appreciated the effort - especially since my 'long list' required some extra figuring and typing for you. <ggg>

Sir Apollo, your survey should be re-posted on all appropriate threads, and should, indeed, be a 'banner read' for all investors.

Thank you for the excellent initiative, project and analysis, as well as for being the kind of person who 'cares'. You have now become one of my 'favorites'.

Well done, Sir Apollo! When you asked the question about allocations, I'm sure you had no idea what you were getting into. I feared you might be overwhelmed by the sheer number of inputs, but you rose to the challenge and have made a major contribution to our understanding of g&k thread dynamics. I'm sure that there will be valuable conclusions reached from your research, and wish to thank you on behalf of the G&K gang for your unselfish effort.

Snasraway: Sorry I was unable to participate as I have not been here recently until now. Having just caught up, I congratulate you for your idea and how informative it is. There is clearly a wide range of approaches to the real world of investing - putting $'s on the line. Thanks for your analysis of the results. Hope there will be full discussion of how those who responded act in fact.

This could also be a lead in to a review of the thread's portfolios for the new year. Seems like this could be a major subject if taken as seriously as it deserves.

I would particularly congratulate Justin for the performance of his investing but even more so for his major contribution to the thread with his management of the Watch and Wait portfolio. This is the heart of the conceptual basis of finding emerging gorillas and royalty.

Would have liked to have entered my "game" but that wouldn't fit.

For those interested the One Gorilla (QCOM), One King (JDSU) and One Godzilla (SFE) since Jan are as follows:

siliconinvestor.com

In sum, up 921%

Best to all and good to be back.

Snasraway: While it is too late for your analysis, here is a rough idea of my personal approach.

As some of you know, I am concentrated in wireless and fiber optics, (with a new additional interest in the internet), but look for new companies therein all the time. And that means I have many small companies as my watch and wait ideas.

QCOM 51%
JDSU 5%
SUNW 5%
SFE 4%
PHCM 4%
PSIOF 4%
ARMY 3%
ICGE 3%
SNDK 3%

The other 20% is where I have my luck lines out.

I am a recent lurker to this thread. Though I had bookmarked it awhile back, I only recently got the chance to read the last 300 +/- posts. Consequently, I was too late to submit my portfolio.

Starting in January, I made the decision quit churning a personal mutual fund, and focus my investments in only a few long term holds (6 max).

I have invested equal amounts (15%) each in EMC, TLAB, JDSU, WCOM, GBLX, with extra in a "diversification play" of 25% in TYC. EMC, TLAB, and JDSU were early purchases, while WCOM and GBLX joined the family since Sept. once I was able to unwind a large PFE position. Thus, some have obviously had more time to grow, as now the proportions are:

EMC 16%
TLAB 16%
JDSU 31%
WCOM 10%
GBLX 14%
TYC 14%

Overall portfolio +77%

My plan as of now, is to forget the diversification investment in TYC, and move those funds to a new tech such as Q, or simply add to my other five. Still working on this, and need to do some more research in Q. Any other suggestions for research are also quite welcome.

Interestingly, while looking at your survey results, I looked to see the percentages and number for the stocks I held and was surprised to find that the results did not include GBLX, though I had seen it listed in many of the supplied portfolios. In fact below are links to some of them. Why is it missing? Or am I missing it?

Snasraway, kudos, incredible work, this will be among the "most-linked-to" posts in all of SI.

In addition to the omission of GBLX, as noted already, I seem to remember ARMHY in several portfolios, but don't see it on your lists? Or is my memory the problem here?

Apollo, my dear friend. What an excellent effort with very interesting results, indeed. I like "our" portfolio, though it is a bit over diversified, imo.

If GMST performs, we are all rich!

Congratulations, everyone on a most excellent consensus portfolio.

Sir Apollo (Snasraway), what do you want to bet that 'the hair club' boys on CNBC pick up on your exquisite piece of work and journalize it?

I think that globalstar (GSTRF) should be in the gorrilla portfolio as a satelite provider of wireless communications.
I hope so because I was buying it heavily last week.

Has there been any talk of it on this thread ?
