But if they are shorting stock and buying warrants, they must intend to hold them beyond the December 17th early exercise date and that doesn't make any sense to me. Can you tell me why that would be sensible?

It would be more sensible if someone is expecting the stock to go *up* significantly between now and December 17. Since there's really no premium on the warrants now, that would be an optimal strategy if you wanted to control the largest number of shares for the least amount of money.

Oh well, I can't guess the ending so I'll just have to sit back and watch the show...
