Anyone remember Exponential? They even sampled the world's fastest mp (550?) at the time, Apple refused to use the chip, Exponential went bankrupt and Intel bid on its IP, but S3 won. Turned out Exp had an unissued patent on dual OS chips that might have blocked Merced. Intel pulled a cross-licensing agreement with S3.
IMO Intel would be forbidden under AT to buy a threatening mp competitor.
There are many CS graduate students who can design the world's fastest chip if they only had the money, the facilities, and build it if they had the money and the fab. My lab once designed the world's fastest computer. Burroughs spent spent $45 million building it, and it worked for several years before ultra-large scale integration came along. Were I Intel, I'd worry about AMD first before bothering with the Russians. Maybe it should ally itself with Chechnya.
