Smiling with appreciation, I know exactly what your son meant. Although some of it had delicacy, most of hard rock was useful for the expression of anger and other relatively primitive emotions. I am reminded of being in the car with my sister and her two kids one afternoon a few years ago. My sister was flatly refusing to let them play rap on the radio, snapping, "That's not music!" Naturally, I exploded into laughter: "Doesn't what you just said sound terribly familiar?"
