The digital flat-screens require digital output from the video card; analog flat-screens will work on the same video cards that drive an analog or digital CRT monitor. Despite the term "digital" in a CRT's specs, it still runs off a video card that will run an analog CRT.
Another point of confusion. Not true of digital LCD's -- they do in fact require special output from the video card. The video standards for digital LCDs are not firm yet (unless it's happened in the last few weeks; I won't claim I'm completely up to date).

This has nothing to do with multi-monitors per se. You can use an analog LCD anywhere you can use an ordinary CRT, though the LCD is not going to be as tolerant of different resolutions as the CRT will be. Some flat screen monitors can run in either analog or digital mode. You need to check the specific monitor specs to know what you're getting.

In short, if you go "check cables" you will find that some match, some don't, and some can go both ways. Swingers <g>.
