Outwardly, it would appear that big OEM's could do this.

However, since Linux belongs to the open source community and a move by a big OEM would probably be considered hostile, the open source community would turn on them. Business Week ran an article a few weeks ago that detailed some "unwitting" attempts by COREL to do business the old way and the flaming they took from the Linux crowd which resulted in them backing down. IBM has stated that there is a different way of doing business with the open source crowd. SUNW acts like it supports it but I think they feel threatened.
