DELL's initial "guidance" pricing for the 8-way was about 10% higher than CPQ in fully loaded configuration but lower for the base unit. The TPC reference system, which certainly qualifies as a "fully loaded" system, was nearly 25% lower.

I would need to go through the TPC certification configuration to see where the savings were but it is either memory, storage or a combination of the two - my bet would be lower cost storage since this is also a "push" area for DELL and they may have worked some favorable storage deals with EMC. Look to some "datacenter" class systems using DELL servers and EMC storage in 1H00...
