QwikSand

Many thanks. My son agreed (had previously objected) to upgrade to Win98 (not 2nd edition). New motherboard is recognized, crash is gone. One problem remains--video

Card is Trident 9685 w/1mb. Win98 loads driver, but boots as if card was set way beyond monitor's resolution (was 600x800). Going thru safe mode forced it into 640x480 long enough to boot-get message from Win98:

There is a problem with your display setting - the adapter type is incorrect ro the current settings do not work with your hardware.

Does Win98 have problems with 1mb video cards?
TIA

Qwiksand & Thread:

I'm about to upgrade a small office file server (1 server, 4pc's & 2 printers). Only need the server for central data storage (and backup) and printing. NO e mail or internet connection at this time (but possible in two years).

Our outside IT consultant has been too busy so I'm about to take the plunge.

I've narrowed the choice between Gateway or Dell for the server.

My concern is with the software. We presently have netware 3.12. I want something that is easy to install and configure (I've been spoiled by windows vs. the dos commands).

Has anyone installed NT4 or Netware 5? and can you give me your thoughts on the installation? Is netware 5 as easy as installing a cd and answering prompts? I can get NT4 installed by either company and have 30 days installation support. At this point in time & not sure if I want NT.

If we could wait till February I'd wait till win2000 but due to y2k and other issues (we have an old alr 486 66mhz with 1gig hard drive) where we outgrew the system a year ago.

Thanks in advance.

Tim
