Re: Gilder's comment:

<<<He goes on to say that when looking at the next five years....."At the same time, storage, long a cheap peripheral, is expected to account for over 75 percent of all expenditures on computer hardware during this period.">>>

Last week I read a Bear Stearn's report on Storage Area Networks. One of the key points of the report stated:

<<<We believe that data storage will play a more central role in server purchasing decisions with the advent of SANs. Currently, data storage accounts for approximately 45% of a server's price, and we anticipate that this number will increase to around 65% in 2002 as data storage requirements will likely double on an annual basis.>>>

Questions for the thread:

*Are we really witnessing the ascendency of storage?

*Will lowly HDD makers capture any of the profit from this ascension?

*If storage demands keep doubling, as mentioned, can increases in areal density keep up? If not what are the implications for ASPs? For head and platter counts?
