John,

"Do you regard management highly?"

You're gonna love Tornado. The entire book is about strategies management must successfully execute. The last pages of the book are all about the tactics management must use to achieve those strategies. They can serve as a checklist for companies we evaluate.

The one aspect of management Moore doesn't seem to delve into is the stuff of character other than to say that there are few managers who are qualified to successfully steer a company through the bowling alley, then the tornado, then down Mainstreet. That's because they require such opposite strategies that one manager who is probably adept at one phase is probably not adept at another phase. As a result, the managers who have executed well in all phases of the product life cycle are indeed supermanagers.

The thing that is really attractive about the best gorillas was not just their market position, but also their managers. The deciding reason for me getting into Gemstar now--rather than waiting for the Tornado--is Henry Yuen.
Others credit the growth of this company to Henry as well. I believe every great company must have a great leader but am interested to learn how the Board of Directors at Gemstar have planned for an unexpected departure of leadership due to death, sickness or other reasons.
