RE: CMGI was/is an incubator.
Now they are trying to be an internet powerhouse with a porfolio of companies.

You're DEAD-ON correct! That's exactly the point. DW, IMO, doesn't want to be the Warren Buffet of the Internet. He wants to the the Bill Gates of the Internet. And given the enormity of the challenge/opportunity, that will take enormous amounts of cash. Enormous amounts.

THAT's the reason for the whole incuabte/IPO strategy. It's his plan for accumulating enough money and control to implement an Internet vision: an operating company so broad and deep that it will have the resources to implement a huge vision for the Internet. When you invest in CMGI for the long-term, you are buying a company that will be the dominant operating company of the Internet.

Isn't that the reason for CMGI Solutions, Icast, all the AD* acquisitions, AltaVista, etc.? To build an operating company...

How's it goin e-dollar. I kind of look at it in biological terms.

The Internet is a relatively new virgin environment that is being rapidly populated. Those "plants and animals" that can establish themselves quickly and spread along with being able to adapt to the environment will have a competitive advantage in this new virtual ecosphere.

I think that this is also part of the problem for many of the traditional analysts that are stuck in industrial age thought. When looked at in terms of survival what is most important? To grow and populate quickly inorder to achieve the best chance of longterm survival or make showing positive earnings the first priority and maybe not be there longterm.

I know that you know the Inet is here to stay ;-) All we have to do is invest wisely and enjoy the ride.

Regards,

To the thread,
Just so we all understand what is under the hood at CMGI with respect to B2B. There is quite a bit of material here so you may want to bookmark for reference and reading over the weekend.

CMGI B2B Portfolio from Bob Brinker's web site:

Overview of B2B from CNBC site. Near the end of the article note the power/exponential curve and the year. Keep that in mind as you read the article after this one.

The Birth of B2B MarketTone

As the details of the new digital economy emerge, many analysts are predicting that 2000 will be the year of explosive Business-to-Business (B2B) Internet developments. Armed with a growing realization that most value-creation in the economy occurs along the B2B supply chain, venture capitalists like Internet Capital Group, CMGI, Benchmark Capital, and many others are now making multi-billion dollar investments in B2B Internet ventures. In fact, recent industry reports by the major investment banks?Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, Bear Stearns, and BancBoston Robertson Stephenson?indicate a growing supply of financial capital chasing the new B2B entrepreneurs. And analysts at Volpe, Brown, Whelan expect to produce an optimistic report on B2B in early January.

You may find the link below worthwhile. It deals with B2B, and provides a potential path to fortitude for those who are or claim to be long term holders of CMGI or looking to become long term in B2B. During my time on this thread, I note that the gyrations in the stock and the markets cause some to make decisions that they later regret resulting in the...if only I had held onto my shares syndrome.
