Yesterday I posted a list of questions to ask about companies operating in the bowling alley. The following questions might be worth considering for companies operating in the tornado.

In the Tornado
As in the other list of questions, the management team is executing properly if the answer to a question is "Yes."

1)Is the company minimizing the customization of its product, thereby commoditizing it for general-purpose use?

2) Is the company's share of the market's profit greater than its share of the market's revenue?

3) Is the company expanding the distribution channel as fast as possible, realizing that a customer lost while the product is in the tornado is a customer lost for life?

4) Is the company shipping anything and everything, realizing that a customer gained in the tornado is a customer for life?

5) Is the company ignoring the customer, exemplified by Henry Ford's edict that "You can have any color Model-T you want as long as it's black."

6) Is the company lowering the price of the product, making it possible for mass adoption? (Probably applies more to hardware than software.)

Dealing with the Power of the Tornado
Unlike the other questions, the company is operating in the tornado properly if the answer to these questions is "No."

1) Is the company trying to control the forces of the tornado?

2) Is the company introducing discontinuity while the product is in the tornado?

3) Is the company designing service into the product? (This is somewhat of a corollary to the above question that asks if the company is minimizing customization and designing the product for all-purpose use.)

Stew thanks for that post and the tremendous amount of legwork you have done in your research of gemstar.

I may have been missing some of the sony sets with guide plus due to the smaller and less visible location of the guideplus insignia. i sometimes i have to do commando manuevers
when trying to avoid descending swarms of tv salesmen, it's difficult to count tvs down the isle with one eye, look at him with the other, keep count in your head and answer all his questions at the sametime. i dread losing count because then i have to start from the first tv again and field a whole other group of salesmen. circuit city is by far the most difficult, they have an unbelieveable amount of tv sales people.
i try to read the product discriptions of most of the tvs but will look closer on my next visit.
as i do future visits i will hopefully get a feel for the product growth in the stores, the increase in salesmen knowledge and use of the product as a sales tool and the increased awareness of the consumer. i try to interact with
at least one or two other people shopping for tvs. i am most interested if any are searching for a tv specifically with guideplus or if they even know it exists. so far no consumer knowledge has been detected. i hope to see this increase dramatically in the future. i also do this as to not suffer from group think and as far as group think goes on the thread, well all i can say is until we can agree whether
england is part of europe we don't have to worry too much yet but should always be on guard for the symptoms. as far as gender bias i would say it would be a shame and a terrible loss
to lose any of our female posters. i have belonged to enough all male clubs, coed ones are much more fun.
one thing better then making money is having fun making money.
