Hi Timothy:

Thanks for your sobering thoughts. No doubt, given the complexities in production, there are bound to be glitches along the way.

The fact that the Athlon has in the mere span of 4(?) months gone from an initial 500MHz to 750MHz (tomorrow?) coupled with the statement by management on Nov. 11 (not even halway through the quarter) that a minimum 800,000 units would be shipped in 99Q4 and that breakeven is a possibility... strongly suggests to me that production of the Athlon is not the problem.

This AMD optimism was further reinforced by PC Data's report that "the Athlon processor accounted for 5.5% of retail PC sales in October"...despite not insignificant mobo supply problems. Also there was the rumoured offer by AMD management to purchase any unsold mobo's...all of which suggests to me that there may be a shortage owing to demand not supply.

It is just inconceivable to me that AMD can go from 500 MHz to 750MHz in 4(?) months, draw straight A-pluses in all benchmarks, ship a minimum of 1 million processors in the first 4 months of its Athlon incarnation, attract IBM. Compaq, Best Buy, Circuit City, Fulitsu and Gateway tomorrow(?) while experiencing production difficulties. Any and all skepticism should be put to rest should GTW climb aboard "the Athlon train" tomorrow, given the bad taste left by AMD in GTW's mouth last winter. Indeed a GTW endorsement tomorrow will speak volumes about the AMD turnaround that is currently building momentum!

Hey Timothy, I'm glad you are already long, as there may not be much of a window left for getting AMD below $30!

RE <<<As for Athlon being currently available I suggest you shop @ a Circut City or CompUSA. They have the 500 and 600 CPQ's as display models only. They can't promise delivery before Xmas. CC also has no 500 or 600 systems in the regional warehouse.>>>

Tim, I just checked with CC in my area. In the store they are claiming that they have 2 700 Athlons, 1 600 Athlon, and 1 PIII 600 (he said they have yet to get the 700 PIII). I said if you only have 2 700 Athlon, then its not likely I can get one for Xmas unless I act today. He said more were available as needed. I did not ask if he meant the warehouse.

I didn't bother to check with Compusa because I don't trust their answers due to the financial problems the company is experiencing. I am much more trusting of a CC or Fry's or Best Buy.

Would others on the thread report availability in your areas (not just what's advertised but what the stores actually have in stock)? I plan to check Best Buy later today or tomorrow.

My local Best Buy has plenty of CPQ Athlon 700 systems in stock. Even one that's marked down as an "open box" item...

RE:"From my research and past experience with AMD it seems to me they have yield problems (but that hasn't stopped my from taking a toe hold positon)."...

How do you figure that? Seems to me they have a mobo problem at best...which is correcting itself...

Jim

Timothy and Thread:

As for Athlon being currently available I suggest you shop @ a Circut City or CompUSA. They have the 500 and 600 CPQ's as display models only. They can't promise delivery before Xmas. CC also has no 500 or 600 systems in the regional warehouse.

I just called 2 of my local BBs. According to the guy I spoke with...the first one had 2 650 Athlon's in stock, but no cumines. The second store had 2 733 cumines and a number of 600 mhz Athlons in stock.

But...I was in the store last week and they had plenty of Athlons. Sounds like they sold a bunch over the weekend!

I do agree that there has been a little "irrational exuberance" on the thread over the holiday. As a true long, I'm just happy to be over my basis again! This has been a crappy stock and to date a relative poor investment (although the past month has made up for it as I bought at the lower prices). But let's face it, there is a lot of good news right now for AMD.

I am confident that this will be a great quarter, and I believe that things are on track for Q1. Yes, Jerry has made some promises before that he couldn't keep. But he appears to have learned his lesson (let's hope). It will take some time for AMD to regain the trust that it has lost from investors and analysts alike. Some people, however, have short memories....<g>

In Amd's defense, this is a very difficult business. Amd has come close to death on many occasions...remember how they couldn't yield at .25? I'm shocked they aren't in chapter 11.

Bottom line, there is a lot of credit that goes to the engineers....process guys and everyone else who worked hard to get the K7 out the door. It has been an impressive performance. As for Jerry's performance...I think all I need to say is "Atiq who?"

For this company to be viable in the long term, of course, this incredible effort must continue.

But hey, I'm preaching to the choir....right?

Also, I'm waiting for the new via chipset to build an Athlon to replace my k6-2...but I'll contribute to sales in the fall.<g>

I was at a Best Buy and CompUSA a few hours ago today. Here's what I saw at BB -

Compaq Athlon 500
Compaq Athlon 600
Compaq Athlon 700
NEC Athlon 500
IBM Athlon 500
IBM Athlon 600
IBM Athlon 650
Compaq K6-2 475
Compaq K6-2 500
IBM K6-2 500 and I think a 475 also
NEC K6-2 500

475 is the lowest MHz K6-2 PC I saw.

Notebooks were 6 K6-2s, 6 Intels

At Comp USA I didn't do much of a check. They didn't have Compaq 700 Athlons or IBM 650 Athlons. There were fewer Athlons here than BB.

There were a bunch of Celerons at both places. But they went down to 400MHz.

As far as PIIIs, at BB I saw a few PIII 500s, a couple of 550s and ONE 733. No 600, 650, 667, or 700MHz PIII.

CompUSA was the same except I think they had PIII 600 systems.

At BB and CompUSA you could order a 750MHz Compaq Athlon system.
