Ten,

RE:"However, I can't really think of a reason why this is so. Perhaps someone who agrees with me could come up with an explanation for me."

What was your question?

Jim

Tench,

Re:"education at university"

If you take a look at freshmen class at berkeley you will find almost 50% are foreigh students or student who are kids of immigrants. With large asian contingent of chinese, indians etc.

I am sure economic reasons are important as well as ego etc.

Frankly it is not clear to me that at undergraduate level there is a huge difference between Berkeley and say San Jose State in terms of quality of education.

Clearly at post-graduate level there is a huge difference between the two institutions.

I grew up and was educated in England and graduated after a 3 year degree at age 21 ( this is standard in UK BTW). And I don't think that UK education at the undergraduate level was at all inferior.

As far as grade school education, I probably concur with some of the statements made. I see less of an emphasis here on english and math. But I can only comment as far as 7th grade (thats my oldest boy).

As an aside from age 11 I went to school from hours of 8:30 till 5pm. My son gets home at 2:30 pm or so except when he has school activities.

Seems to me that another 2-3 hrs of school every day would not hurt him too much !!!

regards,

Kash

RE <<<Actually, I have found that this notion is pretty close to the truth. It's generally agreed that American grade schools are not up-to-par with those of other nations. But people from all around the world value a college or graduate education from an American university over anywhere else. And it's not because they want to get a job in America, since there are plenty of international students who go back to their home countries and work there after getting their degrees.>>>

Tench, they value a American degree because first its prestigious in the same way a Harvard or Stanford degree is prestigious in the US. Secondly, these graduates are desirable to employers in their own country because they are Americanized to some degree and can implement American ways of doing business, they are able to do business directly with Americans, and they can do business with their own countrymen. In effect you get three talents for the price of one.

RE <<<However, I can't really think of a reason why this is so.>>>

BTW its a good thing that you are on the same side as Engel; otherwise Tench would have become sTench real quickly ;o)
