Interesting, I saw those shoes this last spring in LA at the Van Gogh travelling exhibit on loan from the Van Gogh museum. Apparently the Van Gogh museum is getting refurbished so these are on tour.

Edit - I just looked in the catalog and there were two shoes at my show,
a pair of shoes, 1885
a pair of leather clogs, 1889 (this is the one I recall seeing)

So you've got a different piece there most likely.

No, he didn't. On the other hand, he was pretty ruthless with his brother Theo, who loved him and supported him financially for the ten years that he was a painter and who died of lung disease six months after Vincent shot himself to death at the age of 37.
