Windows without wires
Qualcomm and Symbol Technologies are partnering on products for the transportation industry, beginning with development of an on-board computer based on the Windows CE operating system. The major advantage of the new Symbol-built computer, which is expected to be available commercially in the first quarter of 2000, is its flexibility, says Norm Ellis, director of product development-logistics at Qualcomm.
The new "ruggedized" computer, to be available as an alternative to the current in-cab Qualcomm unit, will be based on an open platform, so it will run any software produced for the Windows CE operating system, such as word processing, personal finance, Internet or entertainment applications. Qualcomm will develop Windows CE software to match the messaging capabilities of its current satellite-based OmniTRACS system and to allow drivers to complete logs, determine their rolling estimated time of arrival or submit documentation online. In addition, Qualcomm customers will be able to write their own Windows CE programs or customize existing programs.

Drivers and fleets also will be able to attach other devices, such as bar code scanners, thermal printers or credit card scanners to meet any special need, Ellis says. For example, instead of waiting for a driver to return with documentation, a fleet might add a device to capture the receiver's signature electronically so that it can be sent by satellite for immediate invoice processing.
