The 'buy the next to top of the range' phenomenon is well known to the marketing people in the PC industry. So much so in fact that first tier manufacturers often create a special top-of-the-range machine, which they expect to sell only in very small volumes, maybe less than 5K machines in total, and at a steep premium. They spend a lot of effort tuning it for optimal performance. If they can get magazine coverage as 'best in class' for this machine, they then sell their next best machine well on the back of the publicity, as users trade down to an affordable machine of the same brand.
