Nokia says WAP phone demand unprecedented

HELSINKI, Nov 29 (Reuters) - Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia <NOK1V.HE> is experiencing unprecedentedly strong demand for its first handset that uses the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) for mobile Internet, top executives said.

WAP phones include functions that bring specially designed Internet content to small terminals like mobile phones, and Nokia started shipments of its first WAP phone, called the 7110 or the Nokia Mediaphone, at the end of September.

Matti Alahuhta, the head of the group's mobile phones unit Nokia Mobile Phones, said demand for the 7110 model was much stronger than Nokia had expected.

"I cannot immediately think of anything similar," Alahuhta told reporters on Monday, referring to what Nokia has seen for its other models to date.

Nokia's Chairman and Chief Executive Jorma Ollila said Nokia had already delivered around 100,000 units of the model and that the company was ramping up production to meet demand.
