Slightly OT

>>>regarding the PIN vault -- I can't believe that if the PIN works (granted, a BIG "if"), that it wouldn't work in the vault, as all it does is feed the dialog box...<<<

I received my reset PIN from Travelers on Friday and it has worked without a problem. It prompts you to put in a new PIN after the initial log-in which also was no problem. Updating the PIN Vault is a separate operation, but was no problem and it is also working as part of the log-in process.

Yes, it is indeed a truly unbelievable screwup by Intuit's master bumblers -- but here's what they say on their own tech "support" web site:

intuit.com

"Q: With the special version of Quicken 2000, can I
continue to use the PIN vault to update my
transactions?

A: The PIN vault does not support the Quicken Credit
Card PIN. You must enter your PIN each time you use
the online features of One Step Update or the Online
Center. "

Now -- does this fill me with confidence that these guys can make a finanicial web site work? Is this 'dial-tone quality?' Can these guys be trusted with my financial information? Will I be one of the first to buy Quicken 2001, as i was among the first to lay down money for Q99 and Q2000? Will I go long on INTU at their current stock price?

No, no, no, no and no.

What a PR blow to Intuit -- you spend mega-bucks mailing out CD roms to everyone to FIX a bug, and you wind up alienating EVERY SINGLE credit card customer who now can't access their accounts! What a fiasco...

This is not Intuit's doing.

I have a feeling that there is no bug. I have the sense that the wording is finely smithed to give us that distinct impression, but I don't think there is a bug. I think that we got this "special version" so that we would have to see Traveler's stupid marketing messages when we download our statements from their server. If it was a bug, they could have patched it (i.e., revision 4).

Now, I do not have a problem with this arrangement, because they gave me a nifty piece of software I was going to buy anyway, and they spare me the hassle of entering by hand all the transactions - a considerable number, since we pay in full each month and take advantage of the 30 day float.

However, I note with some trepidation that in the cardholder agreement, Travelers has reserved the right to begin charging a "data access" fee anytime in the future. While they do not now charge it, if they ever start to, I will chuck their special version software in the dustbin, cancel the card, and go find a competitor that provides a similar service.
