CD-ROM Drive Industry Returns to Brisk Business Level
November 30, 1999 (TAIPEI) -- Taiwan's CD-ROM drive makers are busy meeting orders for their overseas clients, especially from Japan, now that chipset supplies have returned to normal.

Their delivery volumes are estimated at between 500,000 and 700,000 units a month in the fourth quarter of 1999.

Lite-On IT Corp., for example, reported deliveries of 1 million drives a month. It topped the list in Taiwan and is on a level with such multinational giants as Philips Electronics Industries Ltd. and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

Lite-On's flagship models in this quarter cover everything from 48x, 50x, and 56x CD-ROM drives, to the 32x drives intended for ultrathin notebooks, and 32x CD-RW.

Acer Peripherals Inc. (API), boasts that it has landed OEM orders from Philips, Mitsubishi Electric Corp. and Medion AG for a CD-RW. Acer Peripherals developed the components for those devices. It expects to produce 7 million to 8 million CD-ROM drives this year, of which CD-RW units will account for 10 percent.

Meanwhile, Afreey Inc. reports that it is now delivering 350,000 drives a month, mainly due to an expansion in orders from distributors and outsourcing partners abroad.
