News from South Africa, courtesy of SA "Business Day" Article, titled "Act may inhibit progress" bday.co.za explains that satellite based telephony not likely to be authorized before next year. Reading between the lines, it seems likely that G* will get authority soon, and anyway sooner and on better terms than IRID, because the G* GW in SA is owned and operated by Telkom, which has a national monopoly on telephony services there until 2002. Iridium would serve SA from a GW located in Saudi Arabia, it seems, and has not yet cut a deal with Telkom or S. African regulators. Old Telkom press release on Delareyville GW: swiftnet.co.za
